CBG (cannabigerol) is often called the "mother cannabinoid" because its acidic form, CBGA, is the precursor from which all other cannabinoids are synthesized in the cannabis plant. It is non-psychoactive and is present in most cannabis strains at very low levels (usually under 1%).

CBG is considered a minor cannabinoid because it is typically found in low concentrations in mature cannabis plants. Most CBGA is converted into THCA, CBDA, or CBCA as the plant matures, leaving little CBG in the final product. Breeders have developed CBG-rich strains that are harvested early to maximize CBG content. Research is still early but promising: a 2013 study found CBG reduced inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease models, and a 2008 study showed it was effective against MRSA bacteria. CBG interacts with both CB1 and CB2 receptors and may also influence alpha-2 adrenergic receptors and 5-HT1A serotonin receptors.
Legal Status
Hemp-derived CBG is legal in the US under the 2018 Farm Bill. Not a controlled substance. Regulatory frameworks for CBG products are still evolving.
